The IMD highlighted that future increases in heat waves would be supported by the strengthening of the mid-tropospheric high and the associated subsidence over central and northwest India. The report shows that extreme heatwaves pose the most significant risk in the densely populated agricultural districts of the Ganges and Indus River basins. The wet bulb temperature extremes - temperature indicated by a moistened thermometer bulb exposed to the airflow - in South Asia are likely to approach and exceed the critical threshold in a few places by the end of the 21st century under the business-as-usual scenario of future greenhouse gas emissions. The frequency of severe heat waves will grow by 30 times the current climate by the end of the 21st century, even if the world average temperature rises no more than 2☌ above pre-industrial levels.
“Most importantly, peninsular India and coastal regions where heatwaves are not common will also record heatwaves in future scenarios,” he added. In future, we expect an increase in two heatwaves per year, which would mean 12-18 heatwave days by 2060,” said M Rajeevan, former secretary, ministry of earth sciences and co-author of the report. “There are, on average, two to three heatwaves in a year the total duration of heatwaves has increased by three days over the last 30 years. Titled “Heat and Cold Waves in India Processes and Predictability”, this report was published on April 24 and is based on an analysis of heat wave climatology and occurrence using data from 1961 to 2020. The IMD declares a heatwave in the plains when the local temperature is expected to cross 40☌ and simultaneously rise 5☌ to 6☌ above the region’s average temperature.
